The driveshaft issue is resolved.

It turns out the small-diameter drive shaft we got is not the correct one. t's 1/2" too short. 14" of tube from weld to weld vs 14.5". Since I had the driveshaft removed from my car, I brought it up to her house and tried it. Fit perfectly. And everything else went smoothly from there.

Of course, I'm now out a flange and drive shaft, but that can be dealt with later...
