Rear Main Oil Seal 700 1989

Hello all,

Doing what is probably a routine post break in job at 180 K miles or so, I just did the rear main seal on my 1989 740 GL wagon, B230 F engine. I have gotten pretty good about the trans coming in and out, as I had to take it right back off when I did not have the Torque converter fully seated on the input shaft....so much for airing my ineptitude. It only set me back about an hour to fix that.

Here's the real rub...the new seal weeps just a bit. I have run the engine for about 2 hours since; the car is still up on jackstands, and I guess it's not the end of the world If I have to take it apart again...the question is this....is there any experience out there that will tell me it will take a couple hours for the seal to truly "seal" ? Crankcase vent system is fine, no internal pressure, oil cap sucks down when loose....and yet there are a couple of fresh drops at the housing right beneath the new seal. Am I out of luck, or should I go forward and see if the new seal seats, expands, or whatever?

Seal is brand new VOLVO dealer part....I haven't cut any corners, new gasket with clean faying surfaces on the seal housing...

Any Thoughts ?

Thanks,

Dave Hamm
