Hig NOx - failed smog 700 1987

My 87 745T w. 332K miles is in good tune with fresh ignition parts and runs great w. normal fule consumption. It failed the CA regular smog test the other day but only on the NOx. I was wondering if there might be something I could try to make it pass, before throwing parts at the problem. My cat, O2 and AMM sensors all have over 100K miles on them, but the tech said the cat appeared to be working. I mean is there a certain brand/octane of gas that is better than others? can I retard the timing slightly? basically, any 'free' or cheap tweaks or tricks I can try?

Thanks,
JJ
