Today I went by a mechanic's that neighbors the warehouse where I work, and he had a gray 1986 240 with an m46 tranny on the lot. Dead tags on the car, so I asked him about it. Turns out it was abandoned 2 years ago by the owner, who was a foreigner, in good running shape with a bad steering rack. Customer couldn't afford the repair bills and just left it. It has 147k on the functioning odometer (he worked on the car previously and told me it was functional at the time). Talked to the guy for about 45 minutes. Tiny amount of rust on rocker, solid body, dented rear passenger door, and he offered it to me for $400 providing I go to DMV and get a title. Said he'd hold onto it for me, as I'm getting married in two weeks.
Point being, having sat for two years, initially what sort of work should I do to get it up to speed, and see how it runs? (He also has two Saabs with the same story, one in perfect order.)
Reason he asked $400 was because that's what the ever-popular m46 tranny commands on the junkyard market, or so he says.
Engine turns over, looks nice thru the oil filler cap - looks like a perfect fix-er-upper to add to the fleet. Also, the wiring harness looked uncorroded, everything looked good under the hood, and the timing belt change was done at 109k.
So what would be inital steps to get the engine to go? What tools/stuff should I bring to see how she runs and bring her up to speed? Thanks in advance!
