Dash repair 120-130

My Amazon has a cracked dash (*gasp*). Not just cracked, but pretty severely warped as well. The lip above the instrumentation is about 3/4" higher than it's supposed to be. The whole left side has lifted actually, and there's a couple cracks near the center.

I'm wondering if I can use one of the inexpansive dash "caps" in place of my dash pad. From what I've read, the caps are intended to go over the existing pad (are they oversized?), and in cases like mine I guess you're supposed to "shave down the high spots." Shaving down the high spots on mine seems like more work than just ripping it out and puttin the cap right in its place.

Has anyone used a cap, and if so, does it seem possible to ONLY use the cap, no pad underneath?

thanks.
