Blue smoke when driving at high speeds 900 1992

Hi all,

I have gotten a lot of help from the FAQs and forum questions of others but here is a new one.

I have a european model 1992 960 2.9l turbo 5 speed wagon. About 3 months ago it started to burn oil, or at least produce a lot of blue smoke just after starting. If I start the motor but don't give it any gas then there is no smoking. As soon as I give it gas there comes the smoke. I would have periods where this did not happen, then it would come back again. After about 2 months of fiddling with the darn thing I think I have narrowed down the reasons. When I get on the freeway here in Germany, and hit the gas, it goes into turbo to reach a good cruising speed(160 Km/h). Doing this from Heidelberg to Munich (350Km) basically drains the motor oil though the motor temp is okay. After allow the car to stand it will smoke on starting. Same thing happens on short hauls. I have found now that if I drive very modestly without allowing the motor to go into turbo mode, then the smoking does not occur on subsequent startups. It doesn't seem like it would be valve seals... So the question is, what can be causing this type of smoking, where should I start looking, and has someone had similar problems. I can continue driving modestly, but once in a while one wants to let loose eh :-)
