164 no start, no spark 140-160 1975

My testing procedures are not good enough. Called the mechanic this morning and he had me recheck: coil has hot connection going in, hot on the way out, and the plugs (checked #1 and #2) have spark. The fuel pump works, #1 plug was damp, #2 was wet.
Mechanic said to pull all of the plugs, clean them off dry, and try again. We may be getting too much fuel and flooding it out. I disagree, because it didn't start this morning, but I am off to clean all 6.
If it doesn't start again, where should I look next? I think the air cleaner will come off before trying again so I can hear the air intake.

Klaus

PS, idiot light for the bulb out is on when key is turned on. I hope that doesn't mean there is a short somewhere. I don't remember that happening before.
