pre-obd-II 900 1996

I have a -96 945 bought in Sewden which has an obd-II connector between the front seat. The problem is that when I connect an obd-II reader, it wont talk to the ECU. When I looked closer at it, the positions of the metal pins in the obd-ii connector does not comply with the obd-ii standard, although the plug fits. I guess that volvo used the same ECU before and after they went obd-ii compliant, and therefore I wonder if the protocol is the same, but pin positions different? Would it be worth to try to change the pin positions?
