240 Diesel Questions 200

Parted with my '89 240 5spd wagon a couple years back, and miss it much.
I like diesels, but am not sure about the one in older Volvo's.

I know it is a 6cyl version of VW's design. Is this design the 1.6 commonly found in the US?
Is it the same bell housing bolt pattern as the VW 1.6 or was the block designed to use Volvo's bellhousing pattern?

I have read MPG remarks that go from 24 to 30, what are some of you with this motor really getting?
Does the turbo version in the 740 get worse or better?
Is it the same motor as the 240 version?

Thanks for any insight!
