142 seat conversion 444-544

Okay, so my latest little project is trying to shoehorn a set of 142 seats into the 544. I was going to just bolt the 544 runners on to 3" wide steel sheets that I bolted into bottom of the 142 seat frame. The 142 seat is wider and won't clear the driveshaft tunnel unless I raise the seat up. I won't bore you all with the details, since it's hard to describe without a picture.
My question is sort of a shot in the dark, but does anyone have any advice on how to make this work? Anyone have any experience doing a similar conversion? I'd prefer to avoid welding, since that is a skill I currently lack. If I need to weld on a couple of 1" box sections I'll probably end up paying some shop to do it...
Thanks in advance!
