Heater Hoses 120-130

I have no heat in the car, and I started to troubleshoot the problem by looking at some pictures of engine compartments to see if the hoses on my car were connected properly. Well, my connections are done in a different way than what I looked at. So my question is, does it matter how the hoses are connected from the block, heater core and valve? Or, is hot water,hot water?
