I have a 1990 740 with the 16 valve head and after making a huge mistake and not changing the timing belt for 100,000 miles, it broke. As you know, I had to replace the head, valves, springs, etc. After putting it all back together with assembly grease and new oil and filter, it had VERY loud lifter noise in what seems like many or all lifters. I bought new lifters and after installation, they were quiet for about 30 seconds at which time they began to sound just as bad as the last ones. I had no oil pump problems before this nor did I have any loud lifters or sludge in the area. The oil pump is running smoothly off the timing belt and I cannot imagine what is causing the issue. I have soaked the lifters overnight and even pumped them up for quite some time to make sure there were no air bubbles in them. I could never get them really "tight" like they were when new, but they should "pump up" after a minute or two right? Before I reassemble this thing again, I would like to know what I can try this time. Help me folks! It's bad enough I have the 16 valve head and cannot find performance parts, but this is driving me crazy and I really need my car back (her name is Valerie). Thanks :)
