checking transmission fluid level--can anyone clarify? 700 1992

I am trying to determine what the correct amount of transmission fluid is using the dipstick. When I check with the car hot and running, as suggested in the manual, there seems to be plenty of fluid--maybe even too much, though I cannot really tell. However, when I check the "cold" level, as advised in this site's FAQ section on transmission maintenance, which states that the fluid should be at the level of the notch in the metal above the plastic fluid level guide, I find that it is about a half inch below the notch. What is an accurate way to check the level? Is the cold method reliable? Thanks
