how to check a starter? 120-130

How can I test my starter? For a little bit there has been a kind of high-pitched clack as the engine was started, but it always went away almost instantly. Just now, when I went to start it it did absolutely nothing! When I turn the key, the AC red light comes on and the fuel gage goes up to wehre it should be, but then when I click it to the start position, the fuel-need jumps to the right, then goes completely dead. It all "plays" dead no matter what I do with the starter switch for a while. Then it seems that when I'm not looking or go do something else, it comes back to life, but only does the same thing.

I checked all the fuses and they are all OK. What the heck?
