timing belt adjustment w/o cover 700

hey everyone
is there an easy way to make sure the timing belt on a 1989 740 GL isnt a tooth off if you dont have the black plastic cover? the reason i think the belt is off is because i just recently rebuilt the engine and did not have that cover to line up the pullies/belt and the car still does not idle very well. all the bad sensors have been replaced and i'm not getting any fault codes.

thanks on advance
-sal
