AC Compressor does not always cycle on 200 1990

I have a 90 245. Two years ago after chronic freon leaks, my mechanic replaced the compressor, many of the hoses using the 134a conversion kit. The AC worked well for a while, however I am experiencing a very aggravating problem: Many times the AC does not cycle on despite turning the "cool" switch. Most times it does not turn on, however I know that the compressor works because it does turn on and functions well sometimes. Any recommendations?
