Help disconnecting steering rack 200 1991

The steering rack in our 1991 245 SE needs to be replaced. I cannot separate the rack from the splined steering shaft. Undid the retaining bolts in several places, tried to pry open the u-joints, etc. but can't get it to budge. Any helpul hints, besides heat it and beat it? I'm reluctant to use too much force given the warning in the Bentley manual that the steering column could be damaged.

Anyone who's BTDT and could offer any tricks of the trade would be greatly appreciated.

Greg
