Water pump/alternator alignment problem 1993 240

I am doing major preventative maintenance on our newly acquired 1993 240 wagon and have hit a snag. I've replace the timing belt and seals, replaced the water pump with a GNB pump and replaced the alternator with a NAPA sourced rebuilt unit. Belts are a new set of Continentals from eeuroparts.com.

Now when I put it all together, the rear of the water pump pulley rubs up against the v-belt tensioner assembly of the alternator. The clearance between the back of the pulley and the timing belt cover is also very very small, but they are not touching.

Can anyone suggest what might be wrong????

TIA for any help,
John
