I was at PickNPull today for an hour looking for my EGR temp sensor, no such luck. While I was looking around, I saw a 740 GLE with a rear dash speaker setup and looked at it briefly. It was pretty crude, but I noticed something through the hole for a missing speaker.
It turned out to be a Garret turbo in excellent condition. There is some mineral buildup in the water jacket, but there is exactly 0 play in the bearings. Instead of the solid cast iron blades for intake, these appear to be made of two sheet metal items connected with small gaps to force air through them. This is a slightly larger turbo than mine, but I bet this design greatly reduces weight and spool time.
It's marked with multiple codes and a small polished plate that says garret xxx 02 A.
The other markings are embossed.
The engine intake side housing is marked with: AR 48 M 24.
The engine exhaust side (where it would mate to the exhaust pipe) is labeled:
MA
DH1/2
A/R 64
What is this? it's not identical to mine, it seems to have the lighter weight blades sunken back farther from the intake port. It looks most like the T25 on the turbo identification page. The polished ID plate is visible, the markings MA, etc. are visible as surface disruption on the bell of the housing (note readable), and the odd square brackets for the vacuum hoses to the wastegate and turbo gauge are different from all others I've seen.
My turbo has some play in it, but right now, I'd like to buy it to a) sell to someone else and rescue it from PickNPull or b) buy to replace my turbo, as it has some play in it. They're asking 84.xx for it, so I'd like to have some profit if I'm to sell it.
The text from the turbo ID page is obscured by the picture. It says
"This is a Garrett T25. They are very rare. I bought this one from Brian Leppin and he said it is the only one he has ever seen. It has the integral CBV like the Mitsubishi turbos. It was used on the 940SE, and maybe a few other 700s anbd 900s. While the exhaust manifold for this turbo looks identical to the Mitsubishi exhaust manifold, the machined flanges which mate to the turbo are different and the exhaust manifolds won't interchange."
