I first started noticing that sometimes when I stop then accelerate, MY car feels like a Rear break caliper is seized , the car kinda Hesitates then semi violently jerks forward. Just before it happens ,usually when stopping I feel a slight shift. When I notice the hesitation ,I also tried reversing . It will Do the hesitation then semi violent lurch in reverse as well as Forward.
SO , one side at a time, Jacked each wheel Up , put the car in nuetral and spun the wheel. They both spin freely. SO no seized caliper or wheel bearing noises/movement. How ever I had at same time had been noticing a whirring /scraping sound . I traced it from the Rear diff to where the Drive shaft mates with the transmission. THE NOISE is Definetly coming form where the Driveshaft mates with the Transmission. It is a scraping sound , Louder when i spin the wheel in reverse. Also on Both wheels (one side off ground at a time) occasionally and ONLY IN REVERSE the wheel would SEIZE . the drive shaft would not Spin. It would still spin forward when this happens . and after a few spins and rocking in gently backwards it frees up and will allow the wheel to roll freely both directions. I also hear this noise in the rear diff , but it is much lunder and defined in the part where teh driveshaft mates with the transmisssion..
I am leaning towards Drive shaft bearing (hopefully). my car is a 1987 245 dl. apprx 140,000 miles . I flushed flushed transmission 6 months ago. and rear Diff 1 month ago. Both fluid levels are OK.. Please someone with knowledge tell me it not my rear diff or transmission. . Remember I spun the wheels with the car in Nuetral. Also I know my rear suspension i s a little old. The trailer arm bushing are ready for replacement according to my mechanic. THANKS IN ADVANCE>
