Tech tip for those of you with 960's or S-V90's:
The bulb behind the tach on my 965 cluster was out so I tackled the R&R last weekend. After removing the trim panel below the column and twisting myself down into the footwell, I could see that it looked pretty good that the bulbs could be reached from underneath. The tech tip to make this possible is to remove the stamped-metal knee-bolster behind the panel. It is only attached with four easy to remove bolts. Once removed I could see the bulb holder and was able to find it by feel to remove it. (I could not look at it and reach it at the same time: I'd have to be "GUMBY" to accomplish that.) I was also able to reach the other bulb that is between the speedo and clock and replaced that too. You cannot see this one however, you have to find it by feel. They are standard bayonet 3 watt bulbs.
NOTE and -CAUTIONS-: There are a couple of sound insulation panels up there hanging down behind the cluster. These need to be moved out of the way to get at the bulbs (to un-twist them). They are made of that shredded-burlap mat stuff with the black coating on one side. Volvo decided to put the burlap side that will catch every pointy thing on the cluster NEXT TO THE CLUSTER-BACK! There are also mylar printer circuit boards handing down and attached to the cluster which are not protected. BE VERY GENTLE when fishing around behind there trying to find the bulbs. To say they look "delicate" is an understatement. Some good news if you ever need to replace any of the little warning lights: you can see almost every one of them when you look up.
Hope this help someone out there down the road. The instructions for removing the cluster to do this made me nervous.... I did not want to pull on it from the front and thus break the connection between the cluster and whatever connector is back there. My experience is that they are fragile and touchy and after a 3-4 month period just when you thought you got off scott-free after removing it, they start acting up. (Especially the fuel and temp gauge.)
