Odometer died, speedometer still works 200 1988

Hi- My odometer died a couple of days ago, the speedometer still works normally. I did not reset the trip odometer beforehand, it just stopped working on it's own. I also own an 850, and experienced this problem after resetting the trip odo. I replaced the broken gear in my 850 with no problems. Is a broken tooth on a plastic gear usually the problem on 240's or could someone give me advice on what other areas to check? T.i.a.- Brett
