Shifting to 1st Gear 200 1991

Just bought another 240. Lots of miles, but in good condition. It has a manual transmission that has a problem. It won't go into 1st or 2nd unless you lift the reverse lock out mechanism. I have pulled up the boot and moved over the detent plate and thought I had it right, but the problem persists. The shifter is pretty sloppy. Before I go in and try the adjustment again is there some other component that might be worn or out of adjustment?
