I've got a 90 740T CA edition (LH2.4 with EGR). The muffler makes this odd bubbling noise. 230,000 miles, unfortunately they do show.
It's always done this, gets so-so (20-21) mileage now that I replaced the plugs I had with NGK, borg-werner wires and all that, has a new air filter, I'm, running Penzoil 10-40 (I might go to synthetic if it turns out to be worth it, i.e. I keep the car). I would like to get the timing belt done, but it's not worn out - the distributor I could do, but the seal from the dist to the head is toast so I'll have it done for me with the belt. The engine was rebuilt about 30K miles ago (not replaced) after my mom cracked the block (100 mile trip - water= driveable car, cracked block).
As far as I've checked, my car's exhaust system is totally intact aside from a tiny exterior rust point at a seam on my first muffler. I cleaned this and tried to fill it with JBweld (for that, I will be cheap) after cleaning it out. The hole does not break the muffler's seal and there is no exhaust leaking from the hole.
When I rev up the car to 1800 rpm or more and let my foot off the gas abruptly, I get a bauldupupup noise from the exhaust system. A guy with a 240 with a brand new 3" (2.5"?) exhaust system said he thought it was running rich. I've got the original (I think. I'm the son of the second owner) exhaust and turbo and all. There's a possibility I have some gunk accumulated on my wastegate, but all my vacuum lines are new. I say maybe some crud accumulated because around 45/2000rpm in 4th (auto tranny), I get a slight turbo spool noise as though it can't open fully.
What's the first suspect? MY FPR is good, but I may have some fuel pump issues. My main pump runs continually in KP2, engine off; no driveability problems but a 9.0 second 0-60. I just ran through chevron gas and added a bottle of injector cleaner. The fuel filter is 5,000 miles new.
TIA,
-Will
