142 kick down cable 140-160 1970

Hey everyone, I just took my 142 in for a free transmission inspection and was told that the clunking into first gear (automatic trans) was happening because my kick down cable was missing! They said it was the cable leading from the dual carbs to the transmission and that I should not drive without it.

BUT, I have been driving without one I guess for sometime.

I found the part online but was told it would take 3 weeks to get.

Can I drive without it? The car clunks into first when I come to a quick stop. If I come to a slow/eventual stop there is no clunking.

Thanks for your help
