Grinding noise, only with worn tire? 700

Our '91 740 turbo wagon was making an awful grinding noise from the right front wheel. Sounded like dragging or worn brakes, so I replaced the rotors and pads. No luck, still made the noise. But the right front tire was very badly worn on the outside edge, almost worn through past the belts in the tire. So, I had to replace the tire. And, to my surprise, it no longer makes a noise with the new tire. I'm confused, what can it be? Wheel bearing, maybe? Could any of you suggest how to diagnose this so I can fix it before it ruins the new tire?
