engine breather hose to nowhere? 200 1979

A new discovery on my 242GT ('79) is that on the engine breather hose thing that comes off the valve cover, one of the hoses goes nowhere. There's a large plastic fitting coming off the valve cover just to the intake side of the oil filler cap, then two hoses coming off that, one of which goes to the intake manifold. The second hose, which looks recently replaced, curves down to the bottom of the strut tower and simply ends without being plugged into anything. There is vacuum in this hose when the engine is on. I figure this is not a good thing, as the hose could theoretically suck in all kinds of excitement from the engine bay into the engine head, which wouldn't be a good thing. Is this for some crankcase breather system that has been bypassed? I'm still learning the inner workings of the '79 volvo...I know my '86 inside and out. Any thoughts are appreciated as always!
