Same thing here about a week ago: 2" slack at the throttle connection. An all-of-a-sudden type of problem. No amount of lube would get the cable to slide back into its tube. It even hung up the gas pedal like someone was pushing back when I went to depress the accelerator. No idea what caused it on my 87 with 100k, but a new cable was the solution. Good luck with yours!
