odd wiring question: stereo/clutch (yes....really!) 200

Hello All. I have a wiring question. I was checking my clutch cable at the pedal. The next time I drove it my aftermarket stereo did not work. I fiqured I knocked something loose. I traced all the wires. The power wires are intact. The ground wire goes to a ground wire that is with a bunch of wires in a black sheath. It runs to the clutch pedal where it plugs into a silver cylinder near the top of the pedal. What is it? Do they go bad? Why do all those wires go to the clutch pedal? I am assuming (yeah, I know.....) that the problem is there somewhere. It's been really quiet in my wagon...well, as quiet as a 240 gets. Thanks!
