tranny dipstick and fluid level 200

I'm trying to monitor some tranny fluid leaks. After driving for a long enough time I'll put the car in park, running of course, and pull out the dipstick. I'm often seeing a level barely touching the stick. But here's the rub. Then when I stick the dipstick back in and pull it out the stick reads a level that is more than adequate. In fact the second time the entire stick is covered with fluid.

I'm guessing there's some sort of pressure relief that's been introduced the second time I put the stick in but am not sure, and am not sure which reading to go by . . .
