rough idle, with fuel economy gauge 'in the red;' any suggestions? 200 1980

Hello all,

I am troubleshooting a 1980 245DL B21F. Said car is equipped with the in-dash "fuel economy" / vacuum gauge, which comes into play here. The car will start fine, idle OK (not great by any stretch) for a minute, and then idle horribly once a bit warm. During this time, the fuel economy needle will sit in the middle of the green portion of the gauge, then creep into the red portion of the gauge as the engine warms. Pressing the accelerator while in Park will cause the idle to smooth out and the fuel economy needle to drop, rather than rise.

The car "drives" fine. That is, while moving, you wouldn't know that there is a problem. While idling either in park or in drive (e.g., at a red light) the engine acts like it is going to die, which it does on occasion.

Recent work includes replacing both fuel pumps + fuel filter, spark plugs, and spark plug wires.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Keith
