1985 Sedan high pitched whine 200

Hello.

My 1985 240DL sedan has developed a high-pitched whine, I think in the front end, when I accelerate or decelerate sometimes. It sounds a little like a jet airplane engine, though not as loud, and increases or decreases in intensity based on the speed of the car. I had my local guy (good guy, but not an expert) check out the bearings and ball joints but he found no problems. I don't think it has to do with the motor at all, as it is independent of RPMs; just the actual speed of the car, and thus the speed of the wheels, tires, axels, etc. Any suggestions?
