Emergency brake cables 200 1983

Hey Bricksters! Looking for some input on e-brake cables. I have been fighting a clank out back in our '83 245 for a year. This week I did rear wheel bearings having found one race completely gouged and one bearing worse for the trip. In the same left side wheel, upon reasembling the e-brake hardware and disc, I found that the e-brake shoes will drag after application of the hand brake. A sharp rap on the drum with a hammer or, indeed, a shake rattle and roll, even a few turns seem to free it. I finally discovered that the cable is hanging someplace. If I pull the hand brake up then release it, the nut and cable don't back down. I spent an hour working the cable with an assistant and trying to get lubricant and other sprays into the cable. Very messy, difficult...helped a bunch, the cable is much more free, but still sticks. Suggestions short of pulling the whole thing and replacing it?

Thanks much,

Dave
