Thanks to all who helped out over the past few days. The Mighty White Volvo lives and runs again. Ticking like a fine Swedish/Belgian watch, too. BTW, mine was made in Belgium.
It appears to have been some kind of failure in the LH Jetronic 2.4 Fuel Injection Computer, or the ECU for short. After fondling, wriggling, pulling and twisting the harnesses that connect the ECU with the EZ116K Igniton Computer while watching voltages and resistance between their two connectors, and noting nothing wrong, I put my new (used, but new to me) ECU in. Voila!!!! First, just measured voltage on the "load signal" line between the two computers, and it was right on target, with none of this 12V hogwash the old computer was giving. Then checked the diagnostics box under the hood, and lo and behold, it worked exactly the way the book says it should for both computers. With both now reporting a 1-1-1 code, or "no faults found." So, tried cranking it up. Start-up was just barely a bit sluggish compared to before its problems, but more on this later. Took about 5 seconds to settle down to a nice purr. Smoked a bit for a while, because of all the oil that had gotten everywhere when the old computer was pouring gas into the oil - about 4 quarts of gas were in the old oil, and it was WAY overfilled. Even had noticed it oozing out from the joints in the exhaust system. Soon the smoke stopped and she runs like a top again.
Why the slightly sluggish start-up? I forgot to reconnect the cold-start injector.
And, with the gassy oil out, new oil, and a new filter, she is not dripping, burning, throwing, etc. any oil anywhere. Whew, I thought she was a goner when she began barfing up oil yesterday.
Have driven two short trial runs, about 5 miles each. Will go for longer tomorrow, then change oil again. There is about .75 qt in the oil cooler that wasn't drained and I want all of the old gassy stuff out of there.
Thanks again, all. I'm beginning to think the nickname "Swedish Brick" has more to do with the way these cars are built than their brick-like shape.
Need to look into whether or not the ECU modification in the FAQ could have been responsible for the problem with the ECU. I tend to doubt it, but it would be good to know so the ECU mod can be modified to prevent this from happening if it IS the cause. That little $12 fix for loss of fuel pump control is way too valuable to give up, even if there is a hidden problem with it.
