Removing Front Seal Carrier Plate 700 1989

I replaced the front seals several months ago and eventually the crankshaft seal started to leak. I went to replace it this weekend and it seemed to be fused to the plate, I had to scrape it off. I think I put it in too deep? The original one (1st time) came off pretty easily. I botched the seal again by putting one side in too deep.

I want to replace the seal again by removing the carrier plate. I tried to remove the plate to push out this seal but couldn't get the plate off after I removed the intermediate pulley and thought I removed all the bolts from the front. Is there a trick to getting the carrier plate off? If I remove the plate do I put the seals on the plate and then reattach everything?

Also, is there a correct way to use a seal puller? I have one but It didn't seem to work for me - operator error.

Thanks!
