Back-up light switch- is replacement w/o tranny removal possible? 200

Hey all-

I suspect my '92 245 w/ 265k w/M47 tranny needs a new back-up light switch. Anyone who has done this job before knows it is a real bear to get to for such a cheap part. Bentley manual says it can be done by "lowering the tranny slightly" to access the top of the tranny. Has anyone done this w/o major disassembly of the drivetrain? I'd appreciate any thoughts or tricks you'd like to share. Additionally, I'd appreciate any info you may have on back-up light failures and weird fixes that were unrelated to replacing the switch.

Thanks in advance!

Andy
