OVERHEATING 1993 240...HELP!! 200 1993

HELP with advice for a 1993 240....car was runnung hotter than usual and mechanis said change thermostat...he said if that doesn't work it's the water pump...well, the radiator bubbled up so hot that it overheated and water was escaping from where?? and I waited, filled antifreeze and drove it and left it for the mechanic for tommorrow morning. I know he'll say water pump. Is this possible? I always thought if it's not a hose, or cracked radiator, or clogged with pieces of rust in the radiator to make it run hot....I never heard of water pump as the culprit right away as the answer. Can someone enlighten me? I didn't see any fluid on the floor after the thermastat and cap gasket were added to remedy what he thought would have been the answer, but I bubbled and overheated again. thanks for any help...lynn at chmtnbliss@cs.com by the way it has been hot out and we were using the air condioner as we were moving along
