how do you know if it's a blown head gasket?

I have a 1993 240. Gas sta guy said overheating coming out of overflow tank sounds like head gasket. He tried thermostsat, said that radiator seems to not be clogged because hoses feel hot, not hot and cold....I said what about water pump? A little side note....He had to replacealternator because car was dead..he put one in the previous 6 mo. so he didn't charge me...he said not what I thought, that it wasn't running fan and car would overheat. He said all checked out that those systems were o.k....he will put it on inspection machine and see if reading is showing antifreeze coming out of is it the tailpipe? I forgot what he said. Does any of this make sense? thanks for helping...car's air was not cold as used to be, car was running real hot not it's normal spot and overheated out of the overflow 2 times. thanks....lynn
