ball joint toast less than a year later 200 1987

I replaced both front ball joints last july, and the rest of the front suspension parts, struts, mounts, poly bushings etc the prior spring. For the last couple of months the driver side has been popping/clunking when the weight shifts in the car. I am assuming it has to be that the ball joint was just shitty and wore out in less than 12,000 miles. There is no visible damage to it, but I have not been able to chect it any other way. Is this common of a certain brand to wear out so fast? I am not sure which kind i bought but besides volvo brand what is the best? Or could this be something else that I am simply missing.
