1998 XC - need hints on reaching the front O2 sensor

Looking for some advice on how to actually get a wrench on the front O2 sensor in our '98 XC. Unlike the 850, the AWD gear seems to block all my tries to get in there from under, or from left side with wheel removed. Any hints? Fortunately, this is just preventive maintenance for teh 90k cycle, but I may just wait for failure if it needs to go to a shop for the swap. Thanks to all,
