Alert Re Front Ipd Sway Bars 444-544

I was just greasing the front end of my "62 544 and noticed that the ipd anti-sway bar is ripping loose from its mounting on the right fork, i.e., the the U-shaped bracket with the two bolts and the poly bushing. It looks more like metal fatigue than from a rusted frame. I haven't dismounted the bar yet, but after I do, I figure I can probably solve the problem by welding a reinforcement plate onto the frame. BTW, it was only noticeable because I had the car on jack stands, wheels off, and the suspension components hanging down. With the car standing on its wheels, it would not have been visible. So, if you have the ipd anti-sway bars, check the mounts periodically with the front-end jacked up. The rear bar was mounted with the reinforcement plates that came with it, and there is no problem there. The bars have been on the car for about four years.
