Odometer/Tripmeter Madnes 200

Ive got the 84 240 and its got tne r 0980 speedometer. as i was driving today the tripmeter stops working. as far as i know does the tripmeter run on the odometer. for instance if the tripmeter fails the odometer fails along with it? i pulled out the cluster and took a look at the speedometer unit and the tiny gear (purple in color?) the gear seems fine, i did not see any broken teeth at all. i dont know where else to look!! any suggestions would be most appreciated! thanks!!
