It should help. With the mileage being as low as it is, I would guess that it is caused by sticky/carboned rings.
They all use oil at different rates anyway. My 86 240 will use less than a half quart ( 10w30) in 5000 miles, with over 200k on the clock.
The 94 940 on the other hand, if I run 10w30 conventional in the summer, will use close to a half quart in about 1100-1200 miles, very close to your oil use.
Part of the reason is the person driving it (my son), and the way he drives, ac running full blast , tunes cranked up and right foot mashed to the floor. He brings that poor thing back with it's tongue hanging out and panting hard.
I have used Shell Rotella T syn 5w40 with good results, and have Valvoline 10w40 Maxlife syn in there now because it was free with the rebate. Both have cut use to about 1/4 quart in 1200 miles.
I also keep the radiator ( oem Blackstone) and ac condensor clean , bug/trash free, and install a new thermostat and rad cap every two years when the coolant is changed to make sure she is running as cool as possible and not overheating.
