1990 245 odd problem when I tried to start the car 200 1990

Hey, my name's Oliver and I was driving a 90 245 when a very strange thing happened. I'm a pizza delivery guy, but I was just barrowing my mom's volvo. Anyways, I go to start it and it doesn't turn over at all, but it sounds like it's running. I try to start it again, and the sound is still there, but it still doesn't even turn over. I take out the key, it still happens. At this point, I don't know what's running, or what is stuck or whatever it is. [maybe a short of some sort?] I pop the hood but I don't see anything. The sound really wasn't that horrible either, it just sounded like something was running... I get back in the car, and I unplug the fuel sensor in the passenger seat to see if that stops it, which it doesn't. So whatever is making that noise, still happens without fuel. Basically, I waited for the battery to drain enough so that it couldn't work any more, and that's what happened. It sputtered and grinded to a halt [ the noise ] and then there was smoke that came from the hood. It was NOT a good smell. More of an oil/metal smell I think, not rubber. ANYWAYS, I have a good used starter I could put in. Do you think I should bother trying to look into it myself? Or should I take it straight to a garage and have them look at it as this may be more major than I'll be able to deal with.

Thanks and looking forward to comments,
Oliver
