Power window wire burnout 200 1983

Hello all!

The power windows on my 83 turbowagon (VA plate 83brick)started shorting out the fuse last Fall. With the heat of Summer approaching, I decided to fix them. I took apart both front doors, and the dash cluster. I discovered that the wires to the FR window motor had literally burned out and melted from the motor, under the dash, to the relay behind the cluster, and a bit past it. I ran all new wiring, cleaned the switches, and then tested. The good news...the fuse didn't blow, and the FL, RL, and RR windows all worked. The FR still did not work.

Question: Is it likely that the overheating killed the relay? And...does anyone know what would cause the wires to overheat like that in the first place?
