Auto shift assembly - are 740 and 940 interchangeable? 700 1990

900 series was only a body line change behind the rear doors to drop the aging 700 style. 940 started in '91, 740 overlapped and ran until 1992 (I think). 760 ended in '90 and inline 6 powered 960 started in 1992.

If your shifter is loose and sloppy, the bushings at each end of the two shift rods are likely worn or missing. So yes, the 940 part is interchangable but probably wont fix the problem, unless the adjusting bolt on yours has loosened. You'll need the same dealer bushings to install a new shifter (since they're not part of it). Time to go under the car and see what's really wrong - might be simpler than you think.
