HEATER CONTROL VALVE 444-544

Hi guys

Can someone tell me the function of the copper wire that goes from the heater control valve unit into the air hose. Is it a thermocouple device that shuts down the valve when the air temperature(in the hose) is too high?????. The reason i ask is that i have rigged up a valve(on/off) between the two hoses that originally went into the heater control unit. This obviously shuts off or allows the water flow through the heater core. Will my 'plumbing' be o.k. or am i risking very high temperature water through the core, or any other danger.

Sunil
