Fixed my shift linkage (with link to pictures) 900

Shift Linkage, back together
'93 945T (automatic transmission)

Allright, it’s not the same as rebuilding my engine but I thought I’d share my experience over the past few week, could help somebody in the future.

Here was the problem: I was in a parking lot, parking, when the shift lever moved without resistance. Car wouldn’t shift out of drive at all, and when the engine was off the car was in neutral. I could drive it (drove it home) but it was always in drive – no park, reverse, neutral, etc.

Following the advice from Spook, Art Benstein, and dnice (thanks!) I looked under the car behind the transmission and found a rod that wasn’t where it was supposed to be, the rod being the shift linkage. I went to the dealer and, looking at their parts diagram, figured out that I needed one bushing, one washer, and one clip. Total cost was $4.75 after tax. Took just a few minutes to get it back together (would have been quicker but had trouble getting the bushing back into the hole).

As a side note, if this ever happens to you when you are away from the house (shift lever is loose, car won’t shift) and the car isn’t in drive... with somebody inside with their foot on the brake and the parking brake engaged, crawl under the car from the driver’s side, at the driver’s door. You can manually shift it by pushing in or pulling out on the rod. Obviously laying under a running car and shifting the gears is dangerous... If the car is in drive, just leave it in drive and go where you need to go though I suppose there's a chacne of something hitting the rod and it shifting while you are driving.

Here’s a link to the pictures: Link to a Yahoo Pictures folder

And a brief description of the pictures:

Apart1: These are the two pieces that should be connected.
Apart2: Same picture, but further back so you can see where it’s located
Parts: The three parts needed to reconnect them.
Partsheet1: The parts on paper (Numbers 17, 16, and 7)
Partsheet2:: The sheet that Partsheet1 came from
Backtogether: The shift linkage back together

If anybody wants a paper copy of Partsheet2 which shows how the shifting assembly is put together and what parts are on it, send me an email with your address and I’ll drop it in the mail for you. It’s for my car (’93 945T automatic), I don’t know what other years it would be good for.
