How long before noisy water pump change? 700 1990

16 yr old original water pump.
noisy from front of car centre.
No leak except some yellowish sediment around thermostat end of top hose.
1 yr ago young mechanic friend held a long screw driver to listen and said it was not the water pump.
Car is otherwise well and compare to a similar vintage VW Diesel,less noisy and rust too.But certainly more noisy than a newish Toyota.
If it was the water pump noise and I do not change it,how long before pump goes kaput.?
