rear end clunking 200 1989

hey guys, ive got an 89 240 with an automatic tranny. I've noticed that sometimes when im screwin around in the rain doing burnouts and what not that im getting this wierd clunking noise while cruising. Usually while accelerating the clunking seems to go away, but its really on and off. I'm wondering if it is my rear diff? and if it is would it be best if I put a high pressure gear oil in there? any suggestions would help. Thanx
